The acceleration is roughly equal to the ratio of the height of fall to the
stopping distance. So something dropped from 1 meter that stops in 1mm sees
about 1000g. If the ground doesn't deform then it contributes zero to the
stopping distance. If the case of your object can deform 5mm you can reduce
the g from a 1 meter fall to 1/0.005 = 200g.
