Beam separation never worked very well. It's ok if you
are hoping to get a fraction of a microgram. After that, it
does not work very well. Tried as early as the Manhattan
project.
Modern Deuterium separation uses a process of pushing
liquids around. Ontario Hydro used to have a plant at the
Bruce nuclear power plant, but shut it down and dismantled
it because they have several hundred tons more than they
need right now. You want some, they will sell it to you at
a reasonable rate. There's some tens of tons on loan to
the Sudbury neutrino detector, for example.
