some believers have religious interpretations for it. They see the
light of their deities descending upon them,etc. ....Particularly
Mexicans seem to be visited routinely, even when awake.

But leaving LSD and other drug induced phenomena aside,
both such video/audio effects can be produced at will with Yoga
and other relaxation techniques. Even just by "watching" yourself
while falling asleep can make you aware of these events and
experience them with/after a few days of practice.
