According to Julian Jaynes, a good-sized chunk of our brains used to be
used for providing us auditory hallucinations, but, because of the
increase in complexity of society, it hasn't been a good way to get ahead
for the last 3000 years or so; but the hardware is still there, and
sometimes switches on.
