How physics can improve your football (Jan 24)

New research on the mechanics of throwing could allow football teams to
make greater use of "throw-ins". Two scientists at the University of
Brunel in the UK have calculated that to launch a football as far as
possible from a throw-in, the best angle to release the ball is 30
degrees. The result differs significantly from the figure quoted in most
physics textbooks (Sports Biomechanics in press).

Are we talking soccer or American football here?

Did you click the link?

Yes I did. Not only that, I also saw the words "UK" and "England" within the article.

Unfortunately, "football" means different things in the US and the UK.

If you plan on preparing an undergraduate homework assignment in
Colorado based on this article, you might want to call this a "soccer"
exercise instead of a "football" exercise.

Click on the link again. There is a picture of a soccer player performing a throw in.
Also, not liking either types of football much, I don't know if there is such a term in American football called a throw in.

A better topic relating to CU's football as a physics homework is the kinetics of rape.
