Hello,
We consider same atoms differently by its isotopes or by its bondings
etc. However, Can atoms vary in size due to some influences on them? I
have following questions:-
TO PHYSICS GROUP:-
1. Can same atoms vary in size or shape?
Yes, if they are in compounds.
2. What can influence size and shape of atoms?
All sorts of things. Bonding with other atoms, external fields, whether
they are in an excited or ground state...
3. Will neutrally charged atoms be different in size and shape from
same charged atoms or ions--means can Ca, Ca+, Ca++, Ca+++...be
different from each other in their properties?
Oh, yes. An elementary chemistry text will go through this in some
detail.
4. Will bonded atoms in any molecule can be different in size and shape
that same atoms in free state?
Yes.
5. Can keeping two substances in close contact to each other alter size
and shape of their constituent atoms?
Yes, but not as much as chemically bonded atoms.
ALSO TO BIOLOGY GROUPS:-
A: Can it effect differently to us, if just size and shape of atoms are
different in us due to various interactions, contacts, ionizations
etc.?
Yes, indeed. This is part of what organic chemistry deals with.
B: Can we have different forms of atoms, Ions or molecules of same atom
or of same molecules which are different in their size, shape, charge
etc...i.e. if Na, Na+, Na++ or Ca, Ca+,Ca++, Ca+++ etc.? If yes, can
these effect differently? If yes, how measure of blood level of any
substance, say Ca,Ca+,Ca++, Ca+++ as just Ca levels can be true
picture of that substance?
Ions and isotopes can be distinguished.
C: How we get different effects by ingestion of different salts inspite
their atomic constituents are same but different in quantity as we may
use then in their ionic form?
See above. I suggest a basic book in "general, organic, and biological
chemistry" typically provided in a chemistry course for nurses and
other allied health majors.
Best wishes.
