but the fft requires that the number
of samples be a power of 2, whereas the dft doesn't restrict the
number of samples.
Nope, this hasn't been true since Gauss in 1805 (his very first FFT was
on 12 samples). I don't know whether OpenCV's FFT supports
non-power-of-two sizes, but Matlab's certainly does.
