What it looks like, is that the exhaust pipes he described on the left
of his vision, the rectangular sets, were a tiny bit of the ring around

exactly, and then they saw the siloette of the thing, freaked, and
started taking evasive measures with hard banks and even a 360 degree
turn as well as climbing altitude etc. and the thing just stayed with
them.
And as I say, you can imagine the pilot of the passing 747 that left
from anchorage and was asked to go and confirm this and came back on
the raido with with, yup, there is a spaceship following JAL 1628.
