Face the facts.
General Relativity,
like Communism and Freudism,
is a Tower of Babel,
that has roots in race and religion,
rather than utility.
You're thinking of string theory.
Things should be judged by their works,
and as can be seen,
General Relativity wastes time, money and minds
on such pursuits as worm holes, time travel,
alternate universes, black holes, warped spaces,
gravity waves, gravitons, etc.
Rational, intelligent, prudent people
do not waste resources on ideas and tools
that consume their resources and return little
or nothing in return.
You mean like Usenet? I fully agree.
The best model for shaping one's future
is to approach reality from THEIR frame of reference,
and to use the simplest tools and coordinate system.
You emphasize the pronoun, but no antecedent noun. Of whom do you
speak? The Great Old Ones?
General Relativity is just the latest form of auguring.
The modern world is built upon the framework
laid down by the Lunar Society,
a group of men who discarded the notion of auguring
that had imprisoned the minds and works of man
for time immortal, all over the world.
Instead of auguring, James Watt,
and the other Lunar Society members,
took the equations of Newton and others,
and used them as tools to control their futures,
rather than react to uncontrollable forces of Nature.
Europe moved ahead of the other nations on the Earth
after they discarded auguring the future,
in favor of using effective tools for controlling the future.
Japan immediate recognized the utility of this idea
after Dewey exposed them to Western ideas,
and they quickly gained in power.
It is interesting to see that China,
and most Asian nations are adopting controlling
rather than auguring their future,
while America and the West are
wasting more and more time, money and minds on auguring,
using General Relativity as their chicken entails.
The percentage of the GNP consumed by research in GRT is miniscule.
Waste comes from all the forms of rent seeking behavior which
accumulate in any society over time. Focusing on research in GRT is
like blaming the downfall of western civilization on subway
farebeaters. Although, there is something behind what you say: you are
but mad north by northwest.
I suggest that Asia will quickly move ahead of the West
as more and more Asians adopt controlling the future,
and more and more Westerners adopt auguring the future.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Been there, done that. The Japanese were going to
kick our butts so hard in the eighties by manufacturing automobiles and
consumer electronics that we could kiss our asses good by without even
bending over. Tell me the one again about how China discovered the New
World before Columbus, but couldn't be bothered?
What really galls me though, Potter, is that my serious comments are
met with silence, whereas your stale palaver gets an enthusiastic
reaction. If there is any interesection between the set of people who
periodically complain about the low quality of posts and lack of
interest in physics in sci.physics, and the set of people who reply to
you but don't seem really inclined to discuss physics, then the set of
all hypocrites in the world has not decreased that day, I tell you.
Yeah, I guess that would therefore include me this time.
