How would you define gravitational potential in the case of a mass
SUSPENDED above the Earth???
Sue... would define it a pair of barycenters inside the objects
which are displaced from their centers-of-mass but trying to
minimise the object's radiation by merging with their
centers-of-mass. IOW the energy to accelerate the apple
toward the planet is actually stored within the molecular
structure of the apple. An apple in orbit is the same shape
as an a apple at the center of the earth, but an apple hanging
from a tree is distorted just as a stretched bungee cord.
The free-falling apple is distorted to a lesser degree, but
nevertheless it is distored because it is accelerating and the
earth/apple barycenter inside the apple is not co-located with
its center of mass.
With further tho't I realised this reduces to an even simpler
description. Four points were defined for an apple and a
planet, Two barycentres and two centres-of-mass.
All four points are co-located when the apple hovers
near the centre of the planet and its molecular 'structure'
is least disturbed. All trajectories are some section
of an orbit and the four points are separated, distorting
the apple and the planet. The pairs of points are under
a Coulomb like tension when the apple hangs from
a tree. That ~roughly~ corresponds to Tajmar and de Mato's
massive graviphoton, communicating within the confines
of the object tho' it shouldn't substitute for the formal
definition they use.
