I'm not entirely sure he was 100% successful -- one of Einstein's great
mistakes was assuming a static universe at one point -- but 99.9% is
darned good. :-)

Well, everybody pretty much assumed a static unchanging universe until
Hubble's discoveries. The irony is that Einstein used the cosmological
constant to stablize the runaway universe until Hubble showed
otherwise. When he then discarded it, calling it the "greatest blunder
of my career", he really couldn't see how it could ever be useful
again, but here we are.
