You are getting told that they are not excessively touchy.
The ones you think are excessively rude are not scientists,
they are the cranks.
Ok, that's reassuring.

I think your first impression was right. I have the same.
So-called physicists on the public newsgroups have consistently
been bad-mannered and generally condescending ever since the
sci.physics forum came on line.
I have been around here off and on for 8 years and after
deep analysis, can tell you however that most of them are
not representative of the real physics community. Most of
these agressors are not even full fledged physicists, but
students studying physics, most not even post-doc, and
generally not as knowledgeable as they themselves think,
that can feel superior only by putting down less expert
contributors.
Very few really competent physicists talk here, and only
occasionally, and then, never are rude to people (the benefit
of real education).
Generally speaking, all really competent physists have real
jobs that leaves little if no time time to waste scanning the
hundreds of posts that come up every day searching for people
to be contradicted and be rude at, and seldom develop an
intererest in making a hobby of putting down people.
Believe me, real physics questions and ideas are not being
formally discussed here to any degree. Nothing was ever
contributed here by physicists that can't easily be found
in any standard physics textbook.
