Effect of black holes on conscious observers

I was reclining comfortably on my bed after a hard day at work, cup of
coffee nearby, trying to understand Schwarzschild's original 1916 paper
on the spacetime geometry of a point mass.

Suddenly, I became aware that my consciousness had been totally
extinguished for a period of at least 1 hour as measured by the bedside
clock! Yet for me, elapsed proper time was only a matter of seconds...
I remember musing about something with my eyes closed, and the next
thing I remember, I had emerged on the other side of a metric anomaly.
I had a slight headache, which I attribute to the tidal effects.
