if the initial impulse is in the direction of the springs (i.e. the first
mass is pushed towards the second mass), you'll have to use a model such
as used for the transmission of sounds in solids.

Yes, the impulse in my question was intended to be longitudinal in order
to have a 1 dimensional system.

The two critical factors there are the Elastic Property (related to the
compressibility of the springs) and the Inertial Property (related to the
mass and separation of the springs and masses).
See

It is not clear which you intended, so you should be able to see why
Sue's answer is not wrong - just not the problem you are intending to
describe.

Wait a moment.
I am speaking about a physical model with just ideal springs and masses
following the Newton laws. I would like to see how I can use the laws of
dynamics to compute the speed of the propagation of the compression
(assuming that the model behave uin fact like a wave).

OK, so having looked at the link provided, you would have got the
sqrt(elastic factor /inertial factor) relationship.
All you need to do is to try and work out what the two factors correspond to
in your model.

I've not thought it through, but the compression factor is probably very
close to Young's modulus and the inertial factor is something like the
mass/distance.

You probably need to do some dimensional analysis to make sure that the
final result has a correct L/T dimension.

Sounds like an interesting exercise.
