I drilled a 6 mm hole, in stone, with a normal 6mm stone drill.
As I needed 8 mm I used a 8 mm metal drill to make the hole bigger,
not deeper.

Now I have about 30 of these holes to be done, in bricks.
And the 8mm drill gets hot. OK.

But this one brick looked different, I drilled about 30 seconds,
the drill came out _red_hot_.

I gather you feel there wasn't enough heat present to account
for what seems to be about a 400 degree C temperature increase
(using "red hot" = 700 degree, room temperature = 300 degree).

I think this is a 600 W electric drill, and counting losses in the motor,
gears etc, maybe 300 W was applied for 30 seconds to a 8 mm thick steel
rod that was at one side clamped in the drill (cooled) and at the other
side in, for starters, cold stone.

Something does not add up here.

Let's do some numbers.

An 8 mm drill has a mass of about 4 gm for each cm of length
(density = 7.87 gm/cm^2, volume = pi*0.4^2).

300 W * 30 sec = 9000 J, which is enough to raise 22.5 gm
or 4-1/2 cm of drill bit by 400 deg.

Now it's probably less than 300 W of heat loss, since some energy
also goes into the actual cutting of the stone. But still, it doesn't
seem totally out of line for the drill bit to have gotten red hot.

Either that or the process is 100% efficient.
I have had this thought before, does friction, knocking of atoms against
other atoms, also cause nukulear (or nuclear) reactions?

No. It's a question of the minimum amount of energy associated
with energy jumps. Individual electron energy changes are on the
order of a few electron volts (eV). Nuclear energy changes are on
the order of millions of eV.

Everybody is allowed a stupid question, and the answer would be NO, but OK,
I did ask.

Sure. You might find a lubricant makes a big difference in your
cutting efficiency.
