In the past we have used small engines
like Estes "C's and D's" to get our payloads
up to 500-1000 feet, but at $3-5 a pop it add's
up doing 10 flights, ($30-50), and we find
flights higher than 500' you lose sight.
In addition the hassle of fusing reaction
engines is getting boring, (I've built very
large engines and it's hard work).
So what we want to do is design a catapult
with specifications in the range of tossing
100-400 gms up about 500' using an 8' 2x4.
Has anyone done this before?
TIA

Ken,
A trebushay will do it--but 400gms with a 8' 2x4--that may be a stretch
for the 2x4's strength.
You think a trebuchet would get the projectile to a high enough speed?

Well, probably not one with a 8' 2x4 :-)) Here's a scaled up version
that throws a 250 lb stone further than a long bow can shoot an arrow.
I thought the OP was looking for something in the 500 ft range.

IIRC, typical range of a good trebuchet is about 300m, and that's with a
sling on the end of the arm. Where the trebuchet wins is that the designs
scales up to large size very well, so if you want to throw _big_ rocks, it
beats the competing siege engines.
