His behavior, right down to how he talks to people and responds to
them, is evidence of this. He has lived his life by answering questions
he doesn't actually know the answer to. If I say something, most of the
time he responds by saying "<foo> raises a good point..." and then
talking about something barely related to what was actually said as a
method of not having to answer a question.

I just don't see why he thinks he can get away with it here. You would
think after many, many years of interacting with professionals he would
have figured out that he doesn't have the same education they do.

Delusions are powerful self-persuaders. Look at Jane Relf
revolutionising relativistic physics.
