speed of light

does anyone know why objects can't move faster than the speed of light?
Why is this a limitation? Theoretically, what would occur if
something did move faster than the spped of light? I have heard that
this limit was found by Maxwell, that Maxwell's theories on
electromagnetics wouldn't hold unless you could not move faster than
the speed of light, and that Maxwell thought there must be something
wrong with his stuff..... but then Einstein had the idea of just
imposing that speed limit on everything and that Maxwell's stuff was
correct, what wazs incorrect was thinking that things could move faster
than the speed of light.
