5. HIGGS LIGHT: MAYBE THE TEVATRON STILL HAS SHOT AT IT. Justification
for building a Supercollider was based on the hope of finding the Higgs
boson, if it exists. After the SSC died, hope turned to the Large
Hadron Collider at CERN, and just maybe to the less powerful Tevatron
at Fermilab. The LHC is expected to start up by the end of 2007, but
meanwhile a new estimate of the Higgs mass comes out a little smaller,
raising hope that the Tevatron might yet find it.

The Standard Model arrived massless. Given that some of the
universe's contents are arguably not flitting about at lightspeed,
mass must be rationalized. The Higgs mechanism, explicit insertion of
a dozen particle masses, and a whole lot of tap dancing rationalize
mass. For all that, Big G has no theoretical basis whatsoever and no
known decomposition into other constants (sorry, stochastic
electrodynamics) - it can only be measured.

The world would be a lot more fun if there were no Higgs boson
detectable (because there is no Higgs boson creating mass). Mass and
gravitation are the heart of understanding reality. It is more than
likely we have erred by deferring to convenience.

That might turn out to be so.
