As I indicated,
I don't know where tj gets his info about Hong Kong,
***{He posted a link: http://hongkong.craigslist.org/apa/268570125.html.
The prices are in Hong Kong dollars. Tonight, as I am writing this, the
exchange rate is 7.81 Hong Kong dollars per U.S. dollar. (See
http://quotes.ino.com/chart/?s=FOREX_USDHKD.) That means the 716 square
foot apartment offered for HK$6,500 at the link goes for
US$822.27/month. Here is a similar apartment in the U.S. for comparison
purposes: http://www.austinapartmentsearch.net/apartment-special.html.
(See the 2nd apartment down from the top of the page.)
Note that the US unit is bigger, nicer, with more amenities, and,
further, it is in one of the best areas of Austin--low crime rate, lots
of nearby shopping, theaters, etc. And it is cheaper: US$774/mo as
compared to US$822/mo for the Hong Kong unit. Further, there is no
exchange risk if your income is in US dollars and your rent is in US
dollars. However, if your income is in US dollars and your rent is in HK
dollars, and the US$ crashes--as it eventually must--then your rent goes
to Mars, and you are royally screwed. One of the worst financial traps
known to man is to owe an appreciating currency while your income is in
a depreciating currency.
--Mitchell Jones}***
$1500.00 American dollars will rent you a 300 square foot
apartment complete with toilet, bath, and kitchen
in THAT 300 square feet.
***{Hong Kong isn't that bad, generally speaking, but it's bad enough.
The reason renting is such a good deal in the US right now is that we
have just had a speculative real estate boom, in which really huge
numbers of people bought three and four homes on credit, because they
hoped to get rich off of price appreciation. Builders have obliged the
speculators by building far more housing than the country needs, and the
result is a glut of empty houses with "For Rent" signs in the front
yards, and collapsing rental rates. --MJ
