Hi T.J., You say your deserted Island, out of site of land,
was 50 miles south of Juneau ?
Admiralty Island is at that location,
and the mountains are never out of sight in that region.

shows a 50 mile radius around Juneau.
Berners Bay, where you said you spent time as a kid,
is about 40 miles North-West of Juneau,
everywhere in sight of mountains.
You must've seriously misjudged the distance you needed to go.
Kind of reminds me of " Wrong Way " Corrigan,
" http:WikiPedia.ORG/wiki/Douglas_Corrigan ".
