Re: textbook peer review?

A question came up in a discussion and I was wondering if anyone could
answer th equestion AND give me a reference to an official answer:

in general, must science textbooks pass peer review before publication?
I've found references on writing textbooks that suggest that this is so,
but if anyone could point me to an "official" answer, this would be a
good thing.

This depends on the publisher. Some of them are very tight, using up to
six referees when you've got as far as shopping your manuscript past the
title page and a synopsis. If the author is careful s/he has solicited
this sort of comment in advance, but not everyone does. Hence the
publisher has to do it. Some are more demanding than others and the
only way to find out is to engage them. I know by my own experience
that an extensive publication track record is _not_ sufficient to
motivate them to relax this :-)
