Hi T.J.,
It sounds like I'll need gear ( launch, Bobcat, cables, chainsaw )
and training before I can pull logs off ( ¿ public ) beaches.
I semi-retired in 1988 ( age 28 ) before you did ( 1995, age 40 ).
You know I'm very attached to academia and the internet,
perhaps I could do something for the " Semester at Sea " program.
Speaking of how I'd get wood for Fearless Johnny,
You told me something like:
Use Fearless, in Seattle.
I'd figure out what the loaded water line would be,,
put 10 feet under the hull, then wait till the tide is out.
Now all the wood is beside the boat on the beach.
Toss the camera over and look at the bottom..
find a flat spot to land at high tide.
I always beached a 2,000 ton ship sideways to the shore.
Put a Bobcat off and run logs to the ship then loaded with the crane.
I'd put 5 feet on ,,float off at up tide,
come back and park 10 feet over the flat spot,
and put 5 more feet on.
Then there's the cable and launch.
Drag a cable to shore connect 50 logs to it,
drag them out a few miles then cut them up on deck.
I've drug out 1,000 tons.. I'd get near with
one big cable and a hundred smaller cables attached to it.
Wait for tide to come in while I'm out 400 yards ,,
the logs float at high tide
and I'd drag out 1,000 tons to 10 miles and grind paperpulp on deck
while the other logs were floating at the end of cables, waiting.
I'd just sail Faerless up and look at the tide charts
and see how deep and park and wait.
Or in a river ,,sail up under a log, cut it off, get it on deck.
I always logged with tractors, Bobcats ..
I'd pick out a good half-mile of beach,
drag a cable 200 yards, connect cables to logs and pull them in...
a hundred tons a shot.
50 tons might last 100 days. a bobcat needs 25 logs .
Or cable out and grab 50 tons and go to sea with it ,,
Fearless will yank it.
Sometimes I sank blocks and drydocked and painted my hull
by putting it 5 feet deep at high tide,
sand blast and paint a days worth ..
do it again and paint my boat in 3 days.
I'd go up to Alsaska and cut down 100 big fucking trees ,,
fall them into the water ,, load them up and sail away.
The logs were as long as my hold. 20 tons each.
Then go to Japan and sell the load for 3/4 mil.
No paper work, no buying .. no one saw ***, no one saw me come/go.
They're too busy looking at the crabbers. a log is a log at sea.
I'd load up in one day ..then sail away.
At the time ,,1980, I made my first few million bucks ,
about 26 years old just out of the U.S. Navy.
Everyone laughed, no one helped.
I found a buyer and did the first two loads alone .
Then I added a ragtag crew and we did loads back to back .
My friends were the last ones to join, they never wanted it to work.
They couldn't find jobs. I had a few million bucks.
I'd say I'm gonna buy a new ship and a mountain or 2 ..
" Yeah, Yeah ", they'd think... " He got luckey once. "
They thought I'd lost my mind and that it'd soon fall apart,
and I'd be on welfare like them.
Bought my first forest.. seaside. Under a 20 mil year contract.
hired all my friends. invested in Bill Gates.
Semi-Retired at age 40 with 10 billion.. blew 4 on engines.
bought a million acre farm in Brazil
to go with my million acre forest.
Cool story, thanks.
.
