Today's Science Times has an article about the cancellation of The
Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a astrophysical particle detector made
with superconducting magnets, and intended to fly on the Space
Station. The sad thing is that the equipment is completely finished
and waiting for an opportunity to fly.
This is the third cancelled big science experiment, made with
superconducting magnets. First there was MFTF-B, the mirror fusion
machine, then there was the Superconducting Super-Collider, and now
this.
There seems to be a curse on experiments with charged particles and
superconducting magnets.
Actually the problem is lack of commitment to scientific funding.
I was observing that said Lack of Commitment falls disproportionately
onto expriments with SC magnets and charged particles. ;( I used to be
in fusion, you see, and someday I may be again.
