Does the L1 point being a bit away from the earth reduce the size of
the cross section significantly?

Not significantly. The L1 point is about 1% closer to the SUn than
the Earth is. This reduces the size of the cross section by about 2%.
Note that in the calcuylation above I rounded down the cross sectional
area of the Earth by more than 25%.
