There is no continuum
***{Hi Aut. :-) For the record, the term "continuity" used in the phrase
"principle of continuity" refers to the continuity of motion--i.e., to
the fact that there are no breaks in the pathway followed by an object
in motion: no points at which the path ends; no points at which it
begins.
Thanks for explaining your "principle of continuity" further. In this
formulation, it is even more demostrably false than in the PREVIOUS
formulation. Solution of the Schroedinger equation for the hydrogen
atom (a completely solvable problem) yields s, p, d, f, etc orbitals.
All orbitals but s have angular nodes - locations where the electron
can NEVER be. Yet the electron moves from one side of the node to the
other, without ever being in the node. All the s orbital electrons
have a finite probability of being the nucleus (this is where we get
the "hyperfine" intereaction). All s orbitals except 1s have RADIAL
nodes, so that the electron can be closer than a certain distance from
the nucleus, or greater, but not "in between" (so to speak).
This is an open-and-shut case. Extensive experimentation says you're
completely wrong.
Multiple pathways can merge together, in cases where an object
is assembled from preexisting parts, and single pathways can split into
multiple threads, in cases where objects are disassembled into parts;
but the pathways themselves have no beginning and no end. That's what I
mean when I say that "no thing may come into existence out of nothing or
vanish into nothing."
Except, of course, for photons, particle-antiparticle pair, neutrinos,
etc....
The principle of continuity, in short, is a
statement about the paths through space taken by objects in motion, and
implies that the universe has always existed, and will always exist.
Existents within it can change their forms according to the physical
laws that define the nature of things, but cannot be created or
destroyed. --MJ}***
; however there is a discretum of aitiolòjies
with partial states.
to wit: the collapse of the entire structure of human
knowledge--it follows that the principle of continuity must be true.
Q.E.D.
Wrong. QM tells everything we can know about the world on a subatomic
level.

***{I think the link you wanted washttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stochastic_electrodynamics. Using "SED" as
the search argument leads to multiple hits, and generates a
"disambiguation" page. It's a good link, in that it shows that there are
serious people around who are trying to approach "QM" problems from a
rationalist perspective, and, in particular, that such an approach
requires an awareness that the "vacuum" is, in fact, filled with
material capable of functioning as the sources of things that are
sometimes falsely claimed to have popped into and out of existence.
