You watch PBS and you soon discover that everything in the universe is
"explained".
I've never seen anyone make anything near such a claim on any science show
or science text or at a science lecture. Where did you get this idea???

Don't watch much PBS I take it. You know, I used to be a huge "Nova"
fan. It USED to really be good with detailed interviews with the
various scientist involved in the given subject etc. But now it's
like watching one of the fundamentalist channels. "evolution" isn't a
"theory" it's FACT. All things such as Newton and Maxwell which are
mere descriptions are loudly touted as "explanations". Greenhouse
global warming is "fact". Gone are the careful interviews of opposing
camps. Gone are mention of any data that is in direct contradiction to
any given theory. The whole thing seems to have gone political I'm
afraid.

A number of things have happened recently ,some good and others not so
good. The dynamicists are slowly tiptiong back into Newtonian mechanics
via 'dark energy' and dark matter' and leaving the excesses of the
last century aside, they do not do or say it explicitly but you will
see less and less of spacetime guys around in the coming years.

Unlike the free reign given to physicists with astronomical material
for the last 3 centuries, the guys looking to sell 'dark' solutions for
cosmological evolution and structure will not venture beyond their own
narrow group, you will not see them on the astronomy forums, they will
only appear in some tv program against the background of stars (always
the background of stars !) where they will go through their usual
spiel about the mysteries of the cosmos. The next time you see them
remember that the only mystery is how they manage to pull off a
chamelion-like change as they go from selling spacetime to 'dark'
matter/energy' cobblers.

myself have no reason to believe that any theory which exists today will not
be modified in the future. I would think any intelligent scientist would
agree with me on this.

Yes, any intelligent scientist WOULD say this. So why can't they say
it on PBS?

Newton "explained" gravity.
Maxwell "explained" "all" of electromagnetics.
And we are taught that since the time of Galileo,
Kepler and Copernicus, the motions of the planets are all "explained"
as well!
Described, not explained.

Thank you. My POINT exactly!

It is truly a shame how far scientists keep philosophy from them.

Amen.

Quantum mechanics prevents absolute knowledge of anything in the future to
be predicted with absolute precision.

Um, is that a "fact" or a "theory"? :-)
