Hello, my question is not about serious science, but it is a genuine
curiosity of mine.
Would a bullet shot from the hight of the highest weather balloon be
able to escape the Earth's atmosphere and enter orbit?
How could one, practically (short of building a rocket), put something
(anything) into orbit?

If it was moving at escape velocity.
Or find a way to apply a force to it the whole way that counters
gravity.
Yeah, we are ALL "curious" about this subject now that there has been
offered a 1 million dollar prize for the first person to get a camera
on the moon and then post photos on You Tube!
There can't be that many of us here to divide the spoils! Lets have a
go at it! My idea is that first of all what with miniature camera
chips one doesn't have to build anything close to a NASA-style lunar
lander. It ought to be MUCH easier to send some micro-circuit to the
moon than even a mars-style robot. Our lander could be a tiny flake.
As Igor notes, the first leg of the trip can easily be made with a
huge weather balloon. Remember the Mogul balloons that were used as
atomic monitors before there were satellites? Those things get pretty
high I think. If the camera were small and light enough I'm thinking
you might drive to and from the moon with just ionic wind!
Another question would be how to deal with getting the photos back on
You Tube. I see two ways. One is to just store them in a chip like a
digital camera and bring the camera back. But then you have to plan
TWO trips one to and one from the moon. The other is to transmit them
back but now you have to have a relatively heavy transmitter capable
of reaching earth from the moon. This makes your launch much heavier.
So come on guys! You all know we have LOTS of people here smarter than
Einstein. Just ASK them!! So pitch in your ideas. Who knows we might
make a few bucks for a sci.physics beer blast!!!! Someone needs to
keep the "sign-up list". Everyone welcome for a share of the project
just by signing up! Kooks welcome too! (One just never knows what kind
of idea will be THE ONE!)
