Electromagnetic Induction problem in kitchen?

We have tried to use at least five different telephones in an area of
our kitchen. After a period of time on some of the phones function
keys quit working while on others the batteries will not stay charged.
We finally installed one of the failing phones in the bedroom and lo
and behold all features worked and it held a charge.
The phone installation causing all the problems happens to be located
just above the electrical circuit box supporting all electric outlets
in the house. The telephone connectors from all over the house also
are located there. We have installed a surge protector and the
electrical and telephone connectors from the failing phone are going
through it but this latest phone is already showing the earlier
symptoms.
Is it possible that a magnetic field is being generated by all of
these electrical connections and, if so, what could be done to solve
the problem?
Thanks in advance for any information that can be provided.
