So is my assumption that folks have read their references to be one
that I shouldn't get too attached to?
Everyone is different- I try and read every reference, but I may not spend that much time trying to understand all the details if the reason for citing the reference is simply the main conclusion. I suppose I rely on peer-review in that respect.
