Heat conduction and the complex error function?

I have analysed some measurements of sensible heat flux in the
atmospheric boundary layer and might be able to describe some of the
flux through the error function of a complex argument as defined in
"Abramowitz and Stegun: Handbook of Mathematical Functions".
In the article "On the error function of a complex argument" by Joseph
Kestin and Leif N. Persen, this function is mentioned to :
...." occur in many problems of physics or engineering. They occur, for
example, in the theory of heat conduction, particularly when non-
steady heat conduction through stratified media is concerned,..."
My question is where I can find some article/textbook in
thermodynamics or heat conduction/flow that describes this
relationship. I have found some solved examples of the heat equation
where the ordinary error function appears in the solution, but none
where the complex error function appears.
All help and suggestions are much appreciated.
