It is closest to us once every month, the Moon's orbit is elliptical
as most orbits are. A truly circular orbit is a rare find.

Newton's contribution to science wasn't the simplistic schoolboy
stuff kingoleo is talking about (although that is a good approximation),
but the verification of Kepler's laws which Kepler found empirically
and Newton deduced mathematically using the calculus he devised
for the purpose.
Kepler measured, Newton calculated (without a computer)
and close agreement was found.

Newton (and Leibniz) didn't just come up with the calculus for
the sake of something to do, they had a purpose for it -- Kepler's
observations. That takes genius, which Newton was, but it also
takes a lot of effort doing the calculations by hand even with
Newton's insight.
Genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.
