The Schodinger equation includes a term for potential
energy.

When you use the Coulomb potential for the
potential energy and solve the equation, you find that there
are only discrete solutions allowed at specific energies.
The numbering of these solutions (which are the allowed
states of the electron) gives rise to the familiar "shells"
(first quantum number n=1, 2, 3, ...) and "subshells"
(second quantum number, associated with "s", "p",
"d" and "f" subshells).

In fact no matter WHAT potential energy you put in,
the solutions for a bound particle are at discrete
energies.

An early success of the Schrodinger theory was that
the energy states it predicted for hydrogen agreed exactly
with the observed emission lines.

the formula is a dummy as well as the computer
the only realy thinking machine as is now
is the human brain!!
