I'm not sure about "U" for "tension", but U is often used for "energy"
(and l.c. "u" for energy density) since E is already used for electric
field. But u can be used for velocity in many contexts also, be careful
(there are plenty of multiple uses for symbols, yet ironically they hardly
use some symbols, like cap Xi.)
Could someone explain the context and specific definition of "tension"
here? You mean EM stress?
