The means for doing that did not exist until about 400 years ago. Prior to that people has their unaided senses and fertile imaginations.
Even with such feeble means, Leucippus and Democritus almost guessed correctly. The did not have the means to substantiate their guesses so atoms had to wait another 2000 years.
And don't knock philosophical babble too much. One third of Newton's -Principia Mathematica- is philsophical babble. Newton did not clearly separate theology from natural philosophy. That separation came a bit later.
