Hi, if ice shelfs keep breaking, how many inches would this increase
the sea level around the world?
Exactly zero.
Shelf ice is already floating on water. It displaces its own weight of
water. When it mets, the ice "goes away" and *becomes* its own weight
of water.
A classic grade schoolphysicsexperiment is to place an ice cube into
a cup and then fill that cup to the brim with water. The part of the
ice above the surface of the water is obviously also above the brim,
but when the ice melts the water never overflows.
Can this eat up land mass?
No. The sea level has risen about 2 m in 7000 years - less than a mm
per year. Before that, during the Holocene the sea level rose about
110 meters in the same period of time.
Wiki has some information about sea level rise.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise
I wonder if there is anything toAlGoreweatherphysicsor he is
just a cry baby for losing the presidency challenge. What do you
think?
OK. I admit it. You've pushed one of my hot buttons. Be forewarned -
rant follows:
AlGoreis not a scientist. He is a politician - a professional
manipulator of public sentiment. This has less to do with sour grapes
over the Y2K election and more to do with an ambitious power play ...
trying an end-run around the established provincial systems of
government and bureaucracies towards a New World Order with NGO
special interests (managed by the oligarchy of billionaires) running
the show.
AlGorehas discovered what third-rate scientists discovered back in
the 70s ad 80s - namely that if you keep ringing alarm bells and
shouting "Wolf!" you can keep the money rolling in, with the
connivance of the media. The Green Nazis have been doing this ever
since Rachael Carson first published their manifesto.
If the Boogeyman ever loses his scare value, you just change his
name. He used to be the coming Ice Age, then DDT, then dioxin, then
PCBs, then Freons and other ODSs (ozone-depleting substances), then
Global Warming, now he's "climate change" (because people are
beginning to notice that we aren't really melting down like they told
us we would just a few years ago). Meanwhile the Ice Age hasn't come,
DDT has been re-authorized for use in malaria control, Viktor
Yushchenko survived consumption of thousands of times as much dioxin
as it takes to scare a Greenie into making manure while only getting a
bad case of acne, the ozone layer is still intact, and still waxes and
wanes, the AGW crowd's predicted sea level rises and superstorms, etc.
have not materialized.
Now they are trying to extort all our resources from us by making us
give up our cropland for "renewable" fuels - reducing agricultural
food production, making us pay more for food, and eliminating the
surplus which we have been sharing with countries lacking sustainable
agriculture (read "poor, starving, Third World"). Never mind that a
doubling of tropospheric CO2 (the limiting reagent in photosynthesis)
will by all accounts increase agricultural productivity and biomass
proportionately.
They are fighting the development of plants to produce large amounts
of electrical power, despite the fact that economic development is
totally dependent on available electric power and is the one thing
that has done the most to lower disease and death rates, improve
health and nutrition, and enable people worldwide to prosper.
They want us to buy indulgences (sin taxes) from the Church of Green
to ease our consciences as we burn carbon-based fuels, assured the for
every tone of carbon we use somebody somewhere is planting a tree in
our names - who is going to get all this "carbon tax money" in the
end?
They are creating "super-governments" like the EU that will have the
power to write and enforce laws without accountability to or control
by the people or the national governments. Sovereignty and the
personal and property rights of individuals are being trampled.

I see. So Al Gore is a clown.
Your word, not mine. I take Al Gore deadly seriously. He is the first
of a new breed of fascists, one with global ambitions who doesn't need
to conquer a country at a time.
And all he says in Inconvenient Truth
is just propaganda for the next election.
Al Gore has no interest in the next election. He has his sights set
much higher now. He is the cult hero of the Church of Green. Read his
book. Drink his Kool-Aid. In his arrogance, Hitler told the world
exactly what his plans were in Mein Kampf. Gore makes you read
between the lines in his "Inconvenient Truth." Ignore his bad science
and alarmism and pay attention to what he feels needs to be done to
save us from ourselves, in spite of ourselves.
You must be a genius.
True, but irrelevant. It does help to be Irish.
How else can a mere chemist stuck in lab cellar all day know all
this stuff....
How can a reasoning, thinking person not figure it out, once you start
paying attention?
There are simple rules for understanding the motivations of other
people:
(1) suppress your own personal reactions for a moment, they will only
distract your thoughts
(2) follow the money, asking yourself "what's in it for him?"
(3) the only thing more powerful than money is ambition <note: this is
the greatest weakness in the US electoral system>, and
(4) "evil" is simply a willingness to allow other people to suffer if
it serves your own purpose.
When ambition brings access to the kind of power to change things, and
that ambition is not tempered by humanitarianism, one sees the
institutionalization of power in ways that disregard the rights of
people. We are forced by those in power to 'tighten our belts' and
suffer for the 'common good', but when you look at it, by failing to
resist we are still allowing those in power to cause us to
suffer.Whenever the 'powers that be' take a right or a personal
liberty away from us it is always on the pretext that it is for our
own good, because they know whats best for us better than we do.
It was written long ago that "the love of money is the root of all
evil." Given that, then the lust for power is the trunk of the tree
that always aspires to tower over its neighbors.

Such brilliance.
So global warming is a hoax. Now I always wanted to vent the
carbon monoxide in my car to the roof or to the sides so
the traffic patrol won't see it coming from the back (and
obvious). We can spread all such fumes without worrying
about ozone holes or other stuff. You just save me a trip
to the car care center for nearly planning to fix the
black smoke coming from the back of my car.
