I need to describe the motion (acceleration, velocity, time) of a
vehicle moving on a surface that may or may not be inclined, taking
into account rolling resistance and air drag, including wind. That
would be easy enough if I had a force, but I only have the power input
and mass. I know P = F · v, but the vehicle starts at rest, and
division by 0 doesn't work well. Anybody have any clue how I can go
about solving this.
Sounds to me that the prof at your school who gave you this problem
was working in a depth far over his head, unless you may have mistated
the homework problem.
What was the exact wording of your homework problem?
Harry C.
It's not even a physics problem. We're supposed to be learning
Matlab. The Matlab I got down, I'm just stuck on the physics here.
We're dealing with a hypothetical human-powered vehicle.
Prompt the user to input the distance, direction, and grade of each
leg of a trip.
Prompt the user to input their weight and height to calculate their
input power.
Prompt the user to input wind speed in mph, wind direction, and road
roughness of course.
Plot the velocity and distance traveled versus time.
Plot an elevation view of the course.
Output a summary of the trip stating at least the total distance
traveled, average velocity, and elevation change of the trip.
I know that
power = 600 - 5 * ln(10 * (time + 0.1)) - abs(bmi_prime) * 20
The issue is how that power converts to force.
