I'm aware of the extreme orientation of Uranus's axis,
with respect to its orbital plane. But we have been
talking about the Earth's axis, which is tilted 23.4 degrees,
with respect to its orbital plane. Mars' axis has a tilt
similar to the Earth's. Jupiter has nearly none. Saturn
has a significant tilt, which you can observe in the
orientation of the rings; and if you observe Saturn's
rings during one long Saturn orbit of the sun, you will see
the rings illustrate quite dramatically how the planet's
orientation with respect to the sun, and us, changes.
Sometimes Saturn's north seems to tilt this way, and
sometimes its south tilts this way. In between, we
see the rings edgewise.
Calvin, the point of this thread is to ignore the tilt
(the tilt only makes seasons "swap" from north to south.)
It is not the cause of the seasons themselves.
ignore the axis tilt and you might soon see the orbit
alone will cause seasonal change without a tilt at all.
Forget the tilt, and concentrate on Earths motion around
the Sun.
