This time, we are not actually going to be "propellantless"
completely.
We will simply not "lose" the propellant.
As usual all power for anything in the device will be
supplied by solar power and all devices inside will be
electric powered.
Solar power is a detail. A simple test to see if this
works is to carry a tube with a heavy piston while
standing in the middle of an ice rink. In this case,
the tube will be powered chemically -- muscle power.
Push the piston in quickly, then pull it out slowly,
as one aligns the piston in the direction one is facing.
(If one can, one might be better off using a child's sled
as a platform, for there are some tricks one can do
while skating that take advantage of the blade's position,
relative to the ice.)
The propulsion force will come from any non burning
propellant being forced out of a nozzle, but after the nozzle,
we will place a curved cone, (convcaved curved from base to tip)
to divert the propelant from hitting a flat surface.
The device will need to pulse each blast and when the
collection base is full, it will slowly pump the propellant back to
a chamber for another pulse to occur.
As the entire objects speed increases from each pulse,
the "pumping back speed" can also increase enough to
allow for faster pulses each time.
And since the pumping back is a reverse rocket, well, you
can probably work out the rest.
Can anyone here explain what "momentum" is to Spaceman? :-)
I guess we could call this the 0 "fuel" loss propulsion
system but of course it can not use fuels that burn
and will need to use propulsive agents that are re-usable
and be powered by solar electric and will not have to carry
anything that is lost for the propuslion to occur.
Absent specialized issues such as interactions with the
Earth's magnetic field, it won't work anyway.
