"Paid in peanuts" is a euphemism.
I know that. You know that. Now think about the hundred who post here
who don't know that. :-)
The engineers I worked with didn't think they got paid what they
deserved either. The gifted ones traded away the high pay in
favor of being able to create the stuff that they did. The ones
I worked with every day didn't even get credit for a lot of what
they did do. Since industry doesn't write science papers, they
won't get it now as cites. Yet they still chose to stay with
the work they did do.
