Such a limited point of view. You'd like Tom Potter, who rejects basic
research as well.
As can be seen from Eric Gisse's comment:
"Tom Potter rejects basic research.."
I have not made my position clear
so that high school graduates like Erich
are able to understand my position.
I support all the private "basic research"
that anyone is willing to spend their
OWN time,money and minds on,
and I support all the publicly "basic research"
that can be justified on the basis
of its' possible return on the investment
of OPM (Other people's money.)
to the people who are forced to fund the research.
Sorry, that's not basic research, by definition. That's development or
applied research.
To make my position clear so that even a
high school grad comprehends it,
I would not waste my own time, money and mind
on "basic research" that wasted time, money and minds
on such things beyond man's capacity
to ever experience in time and space,
like time travel, worm holes, warping through space,
understanding the beginning and end of time,
and the mind of God.
Yes, I know you wouldn't. And you certainly have the option of letting
your appointed and duly elected custodian of your public funds of your
preferences. That custodian will mix in your opinion with that of the
other constituents and, according to the duties invested in that role,
will make decisions on your collective behalf.
The problem is that so-called "basic research"
is driven more by the curiosity and interest
of a small group of gurus on the public dole,
I disagree. Remember that no activity would be sponsored by the public
dole, no matter how strong the interest by a small group of gurus,
unless it were not also perceived to be of interest by the appointed
custodians, who in turn would also not perceive it to be of interest
unless it was also of interest to their constituency. That is the
point, after all, of the representative government. Now, the fact that
you stand in counterpoint to that collective view, does not change the
collective view. However, you are nevertheless represented.
and by the desire to extend knowledge from a fixed model
promoted by race, religion and media, such as Relativity,
than it is by a rational, structured plan.
As Newton's method can be used to
generate fits for many relationships
but cannot be used to generate a relationship that
projects relationships INTO THE FUTURE.
basic research's primary objective should be
"the advancement of knowledge and the theoretical understanding
of the relations among variables" that provide
relationships into the future.
A more rational, cheaper, less driven by special interests research
approach would focus on writing a computer program to grind away
and find the relationships and the time lags
between sets of EXISTING data in the numerous data bases,
and to allow ANYONE to put forth RELATIONSHIPS
to be tested against existing data
and to discard the relationships that are unable to
predict the future.
So-called "basic research" is locked on trying
to fit sets of existing data to popular models such as Relativity,
rather than finding the best relationships
for fixed realtionships such ionization potentials, melting points,
and to model future relationships involving
oil prices, grain prices, earthquakes, weather, etc.
The bottom line is so-called basic research is in bred
and driven by race, religion, nationality, and media,
rather than by a rational plan.

why goint on with it
is irrational!!
