Re: JSH: The argument for 0 funding academia

Gratuitous insults or snide remarks will not save funding for

Academia is in weird position here but academics worldwide need to
understand that they may face a situation where  the world processes
this story appropriately to see that removing funding for academia
could seemingly paradoxically create greater growth in *useful*
knowledge.

Albert Einstein is of course another example of someone who worked for
free at what he loved.

Given my situation I wish to present the idea that he was a norm and
not an outlier in that he worked for free and that the BEST research
will come from people like Albert Einstein, or me!  People who are not
being paid to do the research but who do it just because that's part
of who they are.

The world may simply be throwing money away by paying academics to do
research, and getting nothing in return for that money as well, as my
story has academics FIGHTING research found.

So they're taking money, and doing the opposite of what's expected.

I think 0 funding can grow as an idea.  Of course academia can fight
it, but they're on the public dole.

If the politicians pull the money, what can they do really?  Whine?
Complain?  Say there will be dire consequences?

But Albert Einstein is there as an example, and I will be an example
to show that researchers will DO THE WORK ANYWAY, without pay, and by
not paying, the world can clear out the bad academics who will fight
original research to protect their paychecks.

As those people aren't there for the knowledge, but for the money.

Take away the money, and they will leave with it.

Those of us who work at private universities and are not supported by
grants would not lose any funding at all, at least directly, by some
kind of "0 funding for academics" policy. James, are you saying you
want to cut off all federal grants to researchers (all grants coming
through the NSF, for example), or that you also think all state
universities should be closed?
