...It was for temperature stabiization prior to launch, IIRC. I've
seen these used on other missions, with Pioneer 10 & 11 probably being
the first ones that come to mind. There's footage around of the
shrouds dropping off from one of the upward-looking pad cams, and one
in particular gets most of the launch blocked out because the shroud
falls on the camera.
