That famous phrase in Russian is "doveryay, no proveryay". Ayn Rand
would translate that as "A, but not A", noting that trust and
verification are mutually exclusive concepts.
Politicians can be driven toward oxymoronic statements out of the
desire to satisfy two diametrically opposed camps at the same time
(this is where acting skills come in handy).
