The soi-disant defendant must have seen us coming and plea-bargained.

We all reported at 1330, as instructed, and I sneaked off to take care
of my traffic ticket, paying the ticket and the traffic school
permission fee and surrendering my traffic school certificate. It
took twenty minutes of waiting in line and five minutes of waiting at
the window, but we did it all. When I sauntered triumphantly back
into the jury assembly room, everyone was lining up for notes for
their employers and returning the plastic badge holders.

I'm free for another year, since I didn't sign up for the upcoming
trial estimated at twenty-five days in length. I worry that a retired
WASP woman engineer is hardly the peer of the stereotypical young
minority male defendant.
