It has also taken away the reason for the existence of most of the
shade tree mechanics... Which was performance modifications, not
maintenance.
Maintenance was performed by twenty and thirtysomethings out to save a
buck, using the background experience gained as a teensomething trying
to trick out and improve the performance of his vehicles. Those
performance modifications was the source of the 'informal mechanical
background' that is the subject of this subthread, not the casual and
repetitive maintenance that cars of the era required.
