And, at least in the case of the LOTR trilogy, extensive use of "size
doubles" for long shots, and shots in which a "big" character was in a
scene with one or more "little" characters whose faces couldn't be seen,
or the reverse. So Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli and the like had "larger than
life sized" doubles, and the Hobbits and Gimli had midget doubles. The
extended edition DVD of "The Two Towers" includes a cute short movie which
Sean Astin directed in downtown Wellington using some of these doubles, as
well as some of the other cast, and production crew.
One of the things which helped was that John Rhys-Davies was the right
proportion to play Gimli with the Hobbit actors.
On a related note, was it just me, or did it seem that the latest Harry
Potter movie made a greater effort to emphasize the size of Hagrid? He
seemed to come across more as a giant than he had in the first two.
