The entertainment and automobile markets provides very large
counterpoints. Cars from every manufacturer are, by and large,
interoperable. Just about every studio's films can be viewed at just
about any movie theater. CDs and DVDs from hundreds of publishers work on
hundreds of brands of players.

The history of the phonograph can be used as an example of one way a
non-government-funded ubiquitous computer network might have arisen.
