Can't help noticing these remarks being typical corporate spin/BS as well.
"If objective X is not met, then it was the ultimate objective. And you
say we don't immediately know exactly why--then it was a complete failure.
Let the criticisms begin!" I attend lots of these meetings. Pretty early
on they start talking about the objective's effect on "shareholder value".

Dan's remarks were probably prepared well before the event even took place,
and were agreed on by several people in management, PR, and the like. I
doubt in this situation he would ad-lib any sort of "simple response".
