Another important variable is how quickly the screw accelerates
when answering bells. Throttlemen were always cautioned to open the
throttle slowly so the cavitation warning light doesn't light up.
Newly qualified OODs frequently were confused on this point
thinking that *all* cavitation was caused by throttleman
incompetence. The man orders ahead standard at periscope depth and
threatens to relieve the throttleman if he doesn't stop
cavitating...
